Drive Thru Empire Roadside Business Unlock Order

Turn Grandpa’s dusty drive-thru into a full Route 66 service stop without starving your first building.

Last updated:

Drive Thru Empire is sold as a full service stop fantasy: travelers need more than burgers. You expand from the starter drive-thru into motel, restroom, EV charging, and a convenience store while Stars, cash, and Prestige gate how fast the plaza grows. This page ranks when to open each lane so you do not own five half-broken businesses.

Use it beside upgrade priority. New to the game? Read Getting Started. Preparing a reset? Open prestige and the prestige checklist.

Guiding rule

Depth before width. One automated, fast business outperforms three manual queues. Unlock the next stop when:

  1. The current business has meaningful speed + Safe-O-Matic coverage.
  2. You can fund the new stop’s first crew/speed nodes immediately.
  3. Stars (or level gates) actually allow the unlock.
  4. You are not one Prestige away from wiping progress you just bought.

1. Drive-thru (always first)

This is the tutorial spine: tap-serve food, shrink wait times, hire order crew, and learn offline piles. Do not rush a motel while cars still stall at the window. Pour early cash into S-tier drive-thru upgrades from the upgrade priority list.

2. Motel (first major side business)

A motel turns highway traffic into longer dwell value—beds, check-in, and Fast Check-In style nodes once unlocked. Open it when Stars allow and your drive-thru no longer needs constant babysitting. First purchases: check-in speed, staffing, then collection automation so you are not running between kitchen and front desk.

3. Restroom (high traffic, easy to underestimate)

Restrooms sound silly until you remember every car on Route 66 is a potential pit stop. Turbo Cleaning and capacity upgrades keep this lane from becoming a joke bottleneck. Because it is relatively focused, it is a great second or third open—after the drive-thru is stable and ideally after or alongside early motel income.

4. EV charging (modern highway money)

EV chargers fit the “travelers need more than food” pitch and diversify income when food/motel lanes soft-cap. Open EV when you can afford its upgrade tree without stripping Safe-O-Matic funds from older businesses. Traffic and signage upgrades help every charger bay you build.

5. Convenience store (plaza completer)

The store rounds out the service stop and soaks impulse demand. It shines when the plaza already pulls cars via roads and signage. Opening the store first is a common mistake—without traffic and a working food lane, the shop underperforms.

Alternate orders (when they make sense)

  • Restroom before motel — if Stars unlock restroom earlier and you need a cheap secondary income while saving for motel nodes.
  • EV before restroom — if a patch or level gate hands you EV first; take what the build offers, then immediately fund its speed/automation.
  • Post-Prestige rush — with permanent multipliers, you may open side businesses earlier in clock time while still respecting depth-before-width inside the run.

Never open everything the second Stars allow if you cannot staff the new lane. Empty buildings are how players hit the “finished in a few hours / nothing to spend on” complaint described in the review page.

Stars, levels, and content patches

Stars unlock side businesses; level milestones drip Crystals and Hammers for the Workshop. Mid-2025 updates introduced stronger card systems, new levels, and new areas—track them in version history. When a new area appears, treat it like a fresh business lane: stabilize, automate, then expand.

If a map tile still says “in later updates,” do not burn gems hoping to force it. Gem frustration is a recurring review theme; keep expectations aligned with shipped content.

Automation coverage matrix

Before unlocking the next business, ask:

  • Does Safe-O-Matic (or equivalent collection) cover existing lanes?
  • Are Express Kitchen / Fast Check-In / Turbo Cleaning style nodes online where applicable?
  • Is traffic high enough that a new lane will actually receive customers?
  • Would Prestige in the next session waste this unlock? If yes, read the prestige checklist first.

Victor Steele and multi-business play

Victor Steele’s buyout pressure and sabotage hit harder when your empire is fragile. Diversified, automated lanes give you buffer income during events. Diversified manual lanes just multiply tap chores—and make ads feel worse. If ads already dominate your sessions, consider the No-Ads discussion in the IAP guide rather than opening two more buildings you cannot enjoy.

  • Tier List Hub — ranking overview.
  • Upgrade Priority — what to buy inside each business.
  • Codes — no verified codes; do not delay expansion for fake lists.
  • Updates Hub — new areas and levels that change unlock timing.
  • Player tips — session habits while juggling multiple stops.

Expand like a highway planner, not like a completionist checklist, and Route 66 stays fun longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What business should I open first after the drive-thru?

Usually the motel when Stars allow and the drive-thru is automated enough to breathe. Restroom can come first if it unlocks earlier and you need a cheap second lane.

Should I unlock every business as soon as Stars permit?

No. Depth before width—fund speed and Safe-O-Matic on open lanes before adding another manual queue.

Where do EV chargers fit?

After food and lodging lanes are stable, or whenever the build gates EV earlier—then immediately fund its upgrades so it is not idle décor.

Does Prestige change business order?

The sequence stays similar, but multipliers let you reach later unlocks sooner. Plan resets with prestige so you do not open a store you will wipe tomorrow.

Why do some players say content ends quickly?

Opening everything without upgrade depth burns the content budget fast. Follow this order, Workshop cards, and Prestige for longer runs—see the review page for context.
